Scholarships

The Sterling-Rock Falls Community Trust awards a number of scholarships annually to students from Sterling High School, Rock Falls Township High School and Newman Central Catholic High School. Most scholarships are awarded in early April. To download an application, click here.

Scholarship Funds

Need-Based Funds:

Sterling-Rock Falls Community Trust General Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: Varies
Amount: $1500 for 2-year community colleges and technical schools; $3000 for 4-year colleges & universities

Applicants must be a graduate of a high school located in Sterling or Rock Falls, IL, attending a post-secondary educational institution (i.e. accredited vocational or trade school, community college, university, etc.). Applicants must reside within the boundaries of the Sterling or Rock Falls school districts. They must demonstrate financial need. Students are awarded grants on a one-year basis but can reapply annually. Scholarships are intended for tuition of full-time students.

Home Hospital Scholarship

Number of Scholarships: Varies
Amount: To be determined; in 2016, 3 awards for $500 each were given out

Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. In addition, applicants must express an interest in pursuing a course of study in an accredited institution in nursing or other health related field.

W. Martin Dillon Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: Four year scholarship award, $2500 award per year.. Intended for student attending four-year college or university.

Applicants must be attending a four-year college or university. Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. In addition, applicants must intend to pursue a career in the field of business. (For current year graduating high school seniors only.)

Helene R. Dillon Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: Four year scholarship award, $2500 award per year.. Intended for student attending four-year college or university.

Applicants must be attending a four-year college or university. Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. In addition, applicants must intend to pursue a career in the field of education. (For current year graduating high school seniors only.)

Charles G. Bosco Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 every 4 years
Amount: $1000 award for 4 years. Intended for student attending four-year college or university.

Applicants must be attending a four-year college or university. Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. Also applicant must (a) be ranked in the top 25% of graduating class, and (b) intend to pursue studies in the field of Engineering, preference of electrical engineering. (For current year graduating high school seniors only.)

Russell & Margaret Koster Agricultural Scholarship

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: To be determined; $500 was awarded in 2016

Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. In addition, applicant must intend to pursue a career in the field of agriculture (For current year graduating high school seniors only.)

Robert Propheter Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: To be determined; $800 was awarded in 2016

Same criteria as for General Scholarship Fund applicants. Academic achievement is also a factor. Preference to high school, vocational school or college student pursuing business or construction-related training.

Cadet Thorpe Scholarship Fund

Number of scholarships: To be determined
Amount: To be determined

Applicants must be graduating seniors of Sterling High School, majoring in law enforcement or criminal justice. Award based on scholarship, athletics, extracurricular activities and personal character.

Florence Potter Hankenson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 every 4 years when available
Amount: Approximately $300 per year, four-year scholarship awarded to University of Illinois

Awarded to a University of Illinois student standing highest in the graduating class at Sterling High School and who will attend University of Illinois full-time. Demonstration of financial need is not a criteria for selection.

Lucile Sudbury Memorial

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: Approx. $5000; four year award

Applicants must be graduating seniors of a high school located in Sterling or Rock Falls. Preference is given to a full-time student attending Knox College OR pursuing studies in the fields of music, creative writing, agriculture, home economics or forestry. Demonstration of financial need is not a criteria for selection.

Clement Hey Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 2 per year
Amount: $2000 per scholarship. One time annual scholarship awarded to graduating seniors

Applicants must be graduating seniors of a high school located in Sterling or RockFalls and attending a four-year college or university. They must reside within the boundaries of the Sterling and Rock Falls school districts. Awards are based on academic achievement. Demonstration of financial need is not a criteria for selection. Preference is given to a full-time student pursuing a business career.

Keeney Fund

Number of Scholarships: 2 per year
Amount: Approx. $700 per year

Applicants must be graduating seniors of a high school located in Sterling or Rock Falls. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of Sterling or Rock Falls. Award is based on academic achievement & extracurricular activities; Preference is given to a full-time student pursuing business, accounting or pre-law degree.

Jim & Lenore McKinzie Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1 per year
Amount: $500-600 scholarship per year (one award)

Applicants must be graduating seniors attending Sterling High School. They must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be in the upper one-half of the graduating class. Preference is given to a full-time student planning a career in education. Demonstration of financial need is not a major consideration. Apply through SHS Guidance Office.

SVCC Transfer Student Funds:

These funds are for students transferring from Sauk Valley Community College to a four-year institution.

Juanita Prescott Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1- 2 per year
Amount: $1,000
Applicants must be graduates of Sauk Valley Community College pursuing an undergraduate degree at a 4 year school. Award based on demonstrated motivation, involvement and intellectual curiosity.

Janis Card Scholarship Fund

Number of Scholarships: 1-2 per year
Amount: $500-1,000

Applicants will be Sauk Valley Community College graduates who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 and are pursuing an undergraduate degree in accountancy at a 4 year school.
